We're all tired of hearing about the election, Abby

I don't normally like posting anything political, but this video is to great to pass up.
Abby is crying because she's tired of "Bronco Bama" and Mitt Romney.

Saints and Scripture Rider and Two Youths

"But the spirit of the almighty God gave a great evidence of his presence, so that all that had presumed to obey him, falling down by the power of God, were struck with fainting and dread.
For there appeared to them a horse with a terrible rider upon him, adorned with a very rich covering: and he ran fiercely and struck Heliodorus with his fore feet, and he that sat upon him seemed to have armour of gold. Moreover there appeared two other young men beautiful and strong, bright and glorious, and in comely apparel: who stood by him, on either side, and scourged him without ceasing with many stripes.
Arid Heliodorus suddenly fell to the ground, and they took him up covered with great darkness, and having put him into a litter they carried him out."
I have nothing insightful this week, just that this passage from 2 Maccabees is an OT revelation of the Holy Trinity and a fascinating story. Heliodorus had come to take away the treasures of the temple and for his trouble the Rider and Two Young Men appeared and beat him to within an inch of his life. The only thing that saved him was the prayers of the Jewish high priest.

Sunday Snippets 28OCT12

Its been a while since I've done Sunday Snippets. Life has been hectic. Hopefully, that will change soon but I doubt it. I didn't post much this week, but I am trying to do about 140 more posts by the end of the years so I'll have 1,000 total posts.
This week I took part in 7 Quick Takes, asked a silly question, and posted Saint Quiz XVIII.

7 Quick Takes

    1. I discovered a new blog this week. It is called Wake Up and Smell the Incense. I highly recommend it. Its written by a teenage Byzantine Catholic and has lots of great Eastern Catholic memes.

    2. I had a resolution this year to have 1,000 total posts by the end of the year. This post is my 859th and I'm close, but between grad school, student teaching and other commitments I hardly seem to have any inspiration or time left to write and post about anything. I have a post that I'm going to write after this and schedule for Advent, but I need 140 more post ideas. Any thoughts?

    3. 11 days until Election Day, and only two weeks until the new James Bond film coming out on November 9th. I have no idea what this one is about but I'm sure that I will enjoy it nonetheless.

    4. I honestly don't like either candidate from the major parties and since I'll be disappointed either way, I just as well look forward to something that does excite me. The meme below speaks to just two of my disappointments with Romney and Obama.

    4.
    5.  Our parish has been without a resident priest for about a year now. We had a Ukrainian Catholic priest who happened to live in town celebrate the Divine Liturgy for us most Sundays/holy days and our former priest traveled from Atlanta to celebrate on some of the other Sundays and holy days. We have been blessed more than other priestless parishes. However, I was glad this last Sunday to meet the priest who will move from California to be our pastor.

    6. Reposted from a previous post to fill space:

    Lover of Mankind
O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament Divine
All praise and thanksgiving be every moment Thine
You proclaimed it as You turned the water into wine
Jesus, the Samaritan with oil and wine healed
With the bandage of baptism revealed
The Bread of Life lay in the cross wood of a manger
Feed offered to save mankind from sin's grave danger
In the guise of bread and wine
    Is the Lover of Mankind

    7.  O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; O Lord, cleanse us of our sins; O Master forgive our transgressions; O Holy One, come to us and heal our infirmities for your Name's sake.

A couple of thoughts that I want to share

Remember that Barabbas means "Son of the father". The choice was between two Sons of the F(f)ather. We still often choose the world over Heaven (myself included).
    Keep calm and pray on!

    7 Quick Takes 12OCT2012

    1. Filioque is just a funny word to say. Did you know that even in the Latin Rite, when the Nicene Creed is prayed in Greek the Filioque is not said?

    2. Mandorla is another funny word to say.

    3. Vatican II is now 50 years old. I hope that everyone takes time to read what the documents really say instead of relying on what others say the documents say. How many of us can honestly say that we have read them and know what is really written in them? Too many of us just take other people's opinions as fact.

    4. I like setting Babel and Pentecost side by side since they are polar opposites.

5.This picture is recycled from another post, but it still amuses me so I am re-posting it.

    6. I posted another installment in my series of posts listing things I like about our local Melkite parish, St Ignatios.

    7. O Heavenly King, Consoler, Spirit of Truth, present in all places and filling all things, the Treasury of blessings and the Giver of life, come, O Good One, and dwell in us, cleanse us of all stain and save our souls.

    Grad school and other distractions

Today is the first time that I've posted in quite a while. Grad school and other life events have kept me much busier than I had thought it would.
To anyone still reading: I should start posting more as the semester continues. Most of my classes will end this week.

Things I like about our local Melkite Parish, III

    21. Candles. Its the only parish I know of in the area that still has a space to light candles.
    22. The greeting before the homily. Depending upon the season it could be "Christ is among us!" or "Christ is risen!" or "Christ is ascended!" or "Christ is born!"
    23. The Paschal Troparion.

    24. No extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers. Only the ordinary ministers, the priest and the deacons.
    25. Your name is spoken when you receive the Eucharist. I love it whenever there is a personal touch to the liturgy. When you receive Jesus in the Eucharist the deacon or priest says, "The servant/handmaid (Name) receives the most precious and holy Body and Blood of our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ for the remission of all his/her sins and for life everlasting. Amen."
    26. Antidoron.
    27. Galatians 3:27 This verse is still sung at Theophany, Baptisms, and Chrismations. Its a great reminder that we are still very connected to the Early Christian Church of Sts Peter and Paul.
    28. O Heavenly King, Consoler, Spirit of Truth, present in all places and filling all things, the Treasury of blessings and the Giver of life, come, O Good One, and dwell in us, cleanse us of all stain and save our souls.
    29. King Cosmos on the Pentecost Icon.
    30. Sophia. The idea of Christ as Wisdom is something that really appeals to me. I've always liked the Sedes Sapientiae imagery but its not well known in the Latin Church.
